It honestly doesn't help that news on the influenza virus seems to be reported in a worse light every single passing day, and just the news tonight dedicated the first 12 min reporting on how 'dire' the 'pandemic' is, with the next 8 min reporting how each sector of the community is coping with this flu virus apocalypse. And how ironic it is when during the break came a primer for a show addressing excessive compulsive disorder.

I know this is just like any other seasonal flu virus, which already kills thousands every year, but neither do I want to be the one bringing the virus in. I am pretty certain Maryland is going to get a confirmed case within the next month, with over 30 states in US having that figure presently. So now I have to make the decision in deciding whether this trip is sufficiently 'essential' for me to fly over. Man, this sucks big time, and I feel dumb, worried, irrational, emotional and unreasonable at the same time.

Yep I know no one bothers to read this other than ks, and I deserve it lah [especially since my blog header is still stuck back in time at April, wahahaha]. I really gotta learn to live with other people, to learn to empathise with others instead of just looking out for myself. Tough lessons to be learnt since I've more or less gotten used to being alone 24yrs? Fending for myself, taking responsibility for my own mistakes, just basically caring about myself, an 'all-I-care-about-is-myself' mentality. That got me pretty much to where I am now, with friends but not many close friends [not sure if I wanted that too]. I'm probably the sort that would mind dying alone, some reclusive dude that people 'sorta knew' about, but never knew got to know.

Maybe that's why I like lab research. The fact that my work/results/achievements depends solely on the amount of work that I put in, although it's pretty much null results so far, but then I have no one to blame but myself. I've never been a person that delegates well, because I don't trust people enough. I've never been a person that craves for the leadership position, but rather the second in-charge who dabbles in everything else. I love multi-tasking, although I'm not neccessarily good at that, because I just cant rest not knowing how EVERYTHING is going on.

It's always good to be critical of yourself, but sometimes you can find it all too overwhelming.

First week of going back lab after a two-week break is sloowwww, I'm just recovering cells and culturing enough to conduct experiments... Why cant the stupid klb antibody work?!?!?!

Next week though, is the opposite. On top of optimising the antibody, I still have to optimise klb transfection (hopefully get stables); optimising siRNA kd against klb (gotta use siGLO); make cell stock.

Just got back from a 2-wk trip to Philadelphia, including 3 precious days at Baltimore with ks [though she had so much work to do, see aso sad for her], at the expense of 4 lectures of advanced cell biology and 4 more lectures of protein engineering, so now I have a hell lot of work to be done.

1. Report for Conflict Resolution camp, send emails out to the students [thank god the bulk of the project is over, now for the mundane report writing...]

2. My poor FYP: Gotta find some way to get the klb antibody working, like it did once last month..blah so elusive!! Probably gotta rerun my cell lysates again coz I suspect sth went wrong when I ran the gel, which means I have to recover all 5 cell lines again!!! Then gotta work on generating stables too, so that I wun have to keep using up the expensive Lipo2000. Plus klb siRNA knockdown...

3. Notes for acb, pe: Blah, gotta copy like mad.

4. Grp project for acb: Team formed, made up of most of the lao jiaos (u04s) from the class. Should be fine I guess, all quite capable one.

5. Individual project for pe: Submitted the paper that I will be reviewing ler, still haven got down to ACTUALLY reading it to know wth it is...

6. Registering for GRE: Saw the prep book on the train ride today, blah..got alot to catch up on..

7. Catching up on 2weeks of the daily show and the colbert report: cannot lah, must watch if not i will go mad..plus Heroes first 2 ep are out loh, heroes probably coming out soon! Yipee!

hokay hokay, last sunday was 15km passion run at east coast park, considering that it was after the crazy marathon, I could feel the calves starting to cramp, heng they held up for the route..came in 56 position out 2000+ runners so not so bad loh..oh and the ranking for sundown marathon came out, I came in 81 out of 2700+ runners. wahahaha..this sunday got mt faber run coming up, next month got wave run at bedok reservoir..my dad is siao one leh, register for so many races

had a bad feeling abt this run becoz i'm nowhere near my fitness level even compared to last december's stand chart marathon, gained like 4kg. wahahaha. so save for the twice weekly 16km runs to east coast park, i didn't do much training. wasn't hoping for much for this run, just aimed for a timing under 4hr30min. along the run I just kept telling myself "make every step count", but eventually due to the lack of sleep or just plain fatigue, it became "make every count step", no idea wat that meant aso. and this run is much more disgusting compared to stand chart, just the fact that there're 15 over bridges to run across is enough to put anyone off, heck i dun even use the bridge even when i'm not drenched in sweat after having ran for 20km. very very sick. to make it worse, i lost my finisher medal after the massage session..so disappointed, left my details with the information counter but i doubt anything can be done..kuku bird..

Got sick of reading crappy articles, so now decided to just complain about them here (and dun expect me to come up with the solutions to the problems, I'm not paid a million dollar salary)

Seriously, after describing her dire state, this article somehow implied that the "saving grace" was that $80 food voucher? My god, biased journalism at its worst. Championing the government efforts has to be made in context to the situation right? Who expects the life of Madam Chellam and her family to magically turn around just because they have the voucher to buy food for a week? This is totally different from microfinancing, where you provide loans (must be more than $80 bah) to people who need it to buy equipment to start a business stuff lidat. So please, don't pretend your $80 is going to save their lives, if you want to highlight the good things that has been done, TRY HARDER.

For the whole of ydy, I walked around feeling like a loser, resigned to the fact that I belong to the 36% percent of NUS students that not only do not 'engage in sexual activities once a week'. And so late at night ks msn-ed me a comment that the sample size for this bloody survey was only 56 people, only then it dawned on me the some idiot within The Ridge magazine suck-ed at statistics VERY badly. Finally manage to find the survey results only, will break down the idiotic parts.

so yep this crap 'survey' really got 56 people, probably the 'survey' initiator and his/her friends that he/she managed to jio lah

my god, I think this would be just as crazy as 64% having sex once a week lah, 8.6% of NUS students prefer both males and females, i.e. BISEXUAL!! (not that I am against it or anything, but if we were to even take this survey seriously, this has to be the first ever documented study addressing the bisexual nature of NUS students!!)

ok now onto which physical attribute turns you on, it's not even phrased like "which attribute are you attracted to?", kinda crude way of asking..but look through the options and see what is missing? BREASTS!! come on, if you realistically want a true opinion (since ur survey-ed audience already confessed that 64% have sex more than once a week), jolly well include that in lah. even if that falls under the "Other" option, that's 7.1% only!! Thus we can also conclude that "NUS students who like to have sex more than once a week do not get turned on by breasts". Hmm now the survey is really dubious liao.

now it really gets weird, if 64% are not only having sex, but more than once a week, one would be inclined to believe that at the very least, the same percentage would be non-virgins lah! but it's only 46.4% here!! Two ideas on www.springwise.com caught my attention today

1. www.ecoenvelopes.com

They focus on replacing the standard business reply envelopes with recyclable ones, saving both costs for businesses and the poor poor trees..pretty interesting. Started in 2004, but only now started moving along as they needed approval from the US postal service for their envelopes. Not sure if singpost has a similar requirement or not. I obviously dun get business reply envelopes lah, but was thinking abt the most common mail I get: bills, be it handphone, bank, debit card, insurance. It would require a hell lot from people to 'recycle' their envelopes bah, since there's the hygiene issue. But I was thinking, how about u put another slot beside the post boxes to collect the opened envelopes? Then at least the companies can recycle them? Hehz then again will have to differentiate that slot very clearly if not some cockster will put the actual mail that they want to send out in there too.

Currently the only option for cheap books is to buy second hand from the many faculty clubs that do that, so bookrenters.com follows a similar model, except that it's a new book that they offer so you don't have to worry abt scribbling, torn pages and highlighting. You can basically rent a book from one to four months, can extend and even buy the book at the end. Was thinking if we can do the same in Singapore, i.e. rent out new/second hand books instead of selling them. Potential issues include: Books will get cui3-ed for sure, hygiene factors and also the fact that NUS profs like to use the newest revised textbooks for their reference texts. Maybe we can have a book cover that 'protects' the book from wear and tear. Ask the engine people to come up with something?

Now that I am broke and need funds desperately, $400 for a IPPT Gold seems like the easiest/quickest way to get precious munnies, and so I have embarked on a "Get that $400" program, especially since I HAVE to do one before my birthday, if not kana charged leh..sian

Of course it helps that Prof Wong told me that I can stop doing my UROPS experiments and now get down to finishing the 5000 word report due 24 March, although I have to finish much earlier to let him vet through the report. Spent some time talking about the USP too, that science students tend to see USP as just an "enrichment program" instead of an "elite, exclusive" program. I think it's hard to 'feel' for USP when most of the opportunities are geared towards the humanities students, then he countered that science students can organise their own MIT/Harvard lab immersion/symposium event (but science students lazy one..hee). And apparently not everyone in the program is Honours material (CAP <3.5), that I thought was strange, because the premise of being able to stay in USP is the ability to do honours, or so I thought. We also talked about how science students are 'disadvantaged' in terms of USP course-based modules (CBMs) available, and I proceeded to show him the USP webpage listing all the CBMs. I actually counted 30 Arts and Humanities-based modules till I stopped counting, and then we came to Science, which is just ONE for this semester. Haiz..

Ok so now no need lab, but still gotta look for a co-supervisor for my FYP lah, and the prof that I'm talking to is soooo busy to reply, might have to knock on his door on Wednesday if he does not reply lo. And other than that gotta start REALLY training up for that $400, ran a round of Bedok Reserviour today, attempted to do 10pull-ups but stopped at 9 =( for gold, at the very least gotta squeeze in 10. Panic panic..tomorrow swimming with Chio and Yaohui, hopefully this will be the start of the revival, and my reunion with my IPPT Gold..wahahahaha

saw this poster outside the department of biological sciences at NUS today, coz i was wayyy to early for practical and the lab hasn't open yet so i did a little exploring..it was about graduate studies so naturally i was interested and walked up to see more. if you look closely, for 06/07, NUS had a total of 251 post-graduates (masters and phd) for biological sciences, and naturally you would expect NUS, being a college in singapore, to have the majority of that being locals..right? WRONG! singaporeans barely make up half (69) while those from china (109) are closer to the halfway mark than us, now either most singaporeans find research crappy, or the results are not good enough..maybe this is the case for all post-grad programs in other colleges over the world too? not sure leh..but hmm..cant help but feel weird

This is seriously freaky , I went to NTUC and bought those CNY goodies as 'offerings' to the lab. Given my limited resources I can only go for the cheaper peanut puff costing $4.40, and brought it to the lab on a weekend where I happily proceeded to gobble up the top 6-7 pieces of it. Till Monday then someone in the lab had the great idea [or was simply too bored] to flip over the cover and looked. And there it was! 1 cmi drawing of the face of a clock, probably a poor sad worker lamenting that he/she had to work till 12:15am [I think loh]
But still it's disgusting lah, dunno if he/she got sneeze or spit into the top few pieces or not..coz I ate all of them..if it is of any consolation to the lab, because of my selfless effort [or simply greed], none of them had to go thru it.. Eh dunno if can sue NTUC or not ar..wahahahaha

hmm realised one good thing abt getting attached is that ur own parents will eat good food to treat ur partner, den ur partner's parents will feel bad and treat u back..back and fro..good good, now double the enjoyment..wahahaha

3. Botanic Gardens [semi-outing]

lazy bf got scolded for making the poor gf go out to watch movie or eat for dates, so now we are adopting a new approach, aka embracing nature strategy..it was surprisingly quite relaxing, despite the initial fears of rekindling my army memories..although we had to leave without visiting much of the HUGE botanic garden grounds because of the rain..will be back for sure with more photos! chek jawa, sungei buloh?

till i got abit giddy..hahaa

our first stop, coz by now we're starting to feel quite calm lo..

Sheares Bridge Run (still prefer this to Singapore Bay Run, sounds way too gay)/ Army Half Marathon 2007

As I am typing this, the news is reporting the death of an army captain that collapsed during the run and passed away. It's really tragic, and I do hope running is something that he loved. He came in around 7am so that's a 1hr30min+ timing, you need to love running that much in order to push yourself that hard.

okay back to my ramblings.

This first issue is largely my fault, haha coz I nua-ed too long at home, so by the time we got to the starting point it was 5min to the starting point but the baggage deposit area is nowhere in sight. After grabbing some army admin staff, we realised it was actually at the end point at the floating platform area, which was like 500m away from the starting point at the Esplanade Bridge. So bobian, I took my bro's bag and ran to deposit it and ran back after that. I mean, there is a reason why the starting and ending point are at the same location, because logistically wise it makes sense wat! Runners don't need any help in warming up for the race, I know warm up is very important but don't need to force everyone to jog abit right?

The finish point for 21km is seriously STOOPID, because as runners turn into the last stretch you see a finish point gantry right in front of you. So obviously I ran my lungs, my heart out, ONLY to find out that we have to make a left turn 50m from that gantry, run 50m then make a right turn to the 21km end point. Now I realise why the registration fee was increased this year, coz they have nothing better else to do but to set up 2 end points just to confuse runners (whom by this time have already ran 21km, so expecting them to think straight is probably too much to ask?) When my dad finished his 21km run, we actually wasted a few minutes of my previous hp talktime trying to figure out where he is, till we found out eventually that he ran to the 12km "deceptive" end point. Considering the huge manpower resources available (eh army leh, got so many NS guys to exploit), at the very least get someone to usher, or just print out some signs la, I know there is a big environment awareness culture going on, but hey if you can print 2 sets of gantry banners, on hindsight some paper seems less damaging right??

And so after running past the correct end point, some cockster has to stand right in front of the timer so I didn't know my gun time, thank goodness I timed myself and at least there's the ChampionChip thingy. And after that the baggage nightmare started.

Firstly, they decided to merge all the collection counters under the same category (all Men's Open or Closed merge into 1/2 counters). I was thinking, if they can afford to set up counters to break down each category into smaller groups in the morning, surely they can do the same when it comes to collection right? That's actually the important part mah, coz u dun need to poor army guys to keep running in and out to look the whole area for your bags when they could just have one specific area to search. And dunno why have to make it look so pro, got a partition between the counter and the trucks where they kept the bags. It just makes things worse man, coz the same poor army guys facing a ever increasing group of disgrunted, tired runners have to make a detour around the partitions. I have never ever seen such a setup before for the previous SBR races, so dun understand why this time they have to act smart and end up shooting themselves in the foot instead. Thank goodness I came in early, so I only have to wait 15min (and that is considered short) to collect my bag. When my elder bro came in 1hr later, he was looking at a queue that is snaking out of the stadium, about 800m? which allowed him to luxury of resting 45min before he got his bag, though I doubt the organisers are that thoughtful. haa

Oh yar, there was this kuku bird wearing a NTU dragonboat t-shirt, BLATANTLY cutting the queue right in front of me. For a while I was thinking why this asshole is so daring. I mean he's seriously big, if he wanted to beat me up I wouldn't have stand a chance, especially since I din have the energy to run away too. Haha, so I just asked the guy in front of me if he had seen that dick and when he said no, I just kindly tapped his shoulder and ask him to go to the back of the queue. At least must gather some support first, if I get beaten up at least he can go call the medic to come treat me. Haa

So anyway I just went home to koonz, there was some misunderstanding between ks (who stayed up till 3am the previous night to complete an assignment) and me before that, but all is good now :)

To Whom It May Concern,

Please direct this email to the relevant department before we start a boycott of VgoCorp, Mizuno goods and future races

Having organised several races for the past few years, one might be inclined to think that VgoCorp and Mizuno would have the necessary experience and resources to plan and organise a decent race for runners by now. When I was registering for this race, a friend informed me of the numerous disappointments she had with previous races but I decided to give this race a try. Never did I know this horrendous decision effectively destroyed whatever weekend mood I had. It was a poorly organised, mismanaged event that only served to put VgoCorp and Mizuno in a very bad light, especially when your target audience (unhappy runners) are your potential customers. If there was any doubt in your organisation that this is the case, allow me to point out some rather obvious facts to put it in perspective.

Firstly, there was no proper website for runners to know more about the race. [http://www.vgocorp.com/] did not have any race information [ http://www.worldofsports.com.sg/] only had a race brochure (which obviously was what was used for printing). Critical information (such as ROUTE CHANGES! and water point locations) could be updated to forewarn runners and to help spread the news to the local running community more effectively. In fact I only knew about the race from blogs [ http://www.shaunchng.com/blogs/2007/06/02/mizuno-wave-run-2007-details/]! Surely with registration fees from the huge turnout, I am confident you can employ a webmaster to handle this matter?? Also I am sure online registration is a MAJOR part of most races in Singapore, given the high Internet penetration rate. In fact most races have that option provided (Singapore Bay Run, New Balance Real Run, Standard Chartered Marathon). Obviously the organisers (you) have not seek out to manage this race professionally.

This morning when I got to the starting point I got a rude shock, save for the balloon structure that indicated the start point, there was no other signage that directed runners to the baggage deposit or the lucky draw boxes, making the poor emcee repeat himself twice every 5 minutes. I do not think it will be that expensive to print and laminate signs to direct runners to the appropriate locations but I must be certain this simple fact did not cross your brains. Also, there was a massive jam along the way into Temasek Polytechnic, surely after knowing that you will be expecting 8000+ runners you can afford to allocate MORE manpower? And please, for god sake use a more modern timing technology other than "let me look at the sky and figure out what time it is", using a ChampionChip technology is almost the de facto standard for races nowadays, and having that allows you to send runners off in waves, instead of one big human traffic crowd at the start point. I do not know which primitive era you live in, but please, just Google for "ChampionChip" and I am sure you can find something useful.

Also, the fact that the race route was changed at the very last minute was a 'nice' move to add more unpleasant surprises to the race, compounded by the fact that there was NO announcements made to inform runners of the change. I had a group of friends who are rather outstanding runners (several of which came in top 10 for the recent Singapore Passion Run). In his words, "we were getting ready for the final burst at the end, thinking the end point was at TP, and before we know it, the race ended without a warning". Also, if you can take the trouble to print out a few (I am giving the benefit of the doubt as I only saw ONE) signs that show the new route, why not include the locations of the water points too?

I thought that things will be alright once we get the race started, but I was immediately proven otherwise.

During the race route planning, did it ever cross your minds that given such a large group, the presence of "gates" at the beginning would cause serious choke points? I am pretty sure I was walking all the way during the first 6 minutes , until I managed to squeeze my way out of TP. Even after that I was running on the grass beside the track due to the sheer number of runners. The last time I checked, this race wasn't called a cross terrain run.

The water points were another disappointment, when I ran past the water point at the "new" end point, I was disgusted to find only 1 person at the station, he was so overwhelmed by the volume of runners that we simply grabbed the bottles off the table as we ran past. Once again, knowing you have 8000+ runners, wouldn't it make sense to increase manpower? The last race I ran where there was only 1 person at the water point was during my army running sessions, where 30 people instead of 8000+ were running, that's 267 times less people than today's race.

After coming out of Bedok reservoir, because of the huge number of runners, there was a big jam on the pavements where everyone was trying to run, eventually many had to risk running on the road just to move forward. Another important point for race planning! Given the stretch of road is relatively clear, PLEASE consider closing one lane so that there is more space to run. Throughout the entire race, the pavement is just enough for 2 runners shoulder to shoulder, this is a race, not a walk-a-jog event.

And finally when I get to the end point, there were so many conflicting instructions, some were saying the end point is the mizuno gantry, some were saying it is under the banner. Proper directions would be good for runners. And thanks to the non-existent timer, I completed the race without knowing my timing, once again for your information I have not mastered the act of knowing the time by looking at the sky. Also the goodie bag collection was hidden away from public view so it took me a while to find it, and even so I was in the wrong queue for 10min without knowing, until a kind fellow competitive runner came along and directed me to another queue. I have never seen such a long queue for goodie bags in my entire life (once again MORE MANPOWER would be nice), please do not overwork the poor volunteers.

The collection of baggage was also another disaster, firstly I would think MUCH better thought can be given to baggage collection, especially since all number tags have the baggage tag attached to it. So imagine my shock when I saw 2 vans (one each for males and females) trying to squeeze as much baggage into them for a sheer number of runners. At the end point where we were supposed to collect our baggage, it was another human congregation, probably a fitting unpleasant end to the morning disaster.

I am absolutely sure I am not the only one feeling this disgruntled with the whole race, and given that this is not your first race I am honestly expecting a much more professional organisation. All I got was a poor event screaming AMATEUR from the beginning till the end. Please, I am pleading on my knees, put more thought and effort into future events. Otherwise, just STOP organising and spare us the agony. Singapore is till trying to be a sports hub and events like these are NOT helpful.

I am expecting a reply from a member of the organising committee soon. And given the number of unhappy runners, I can assure you I will do my very best to make sure we will do something significant to grab your attention if you do not do so.

yesterday i went to help out the noc booth for nus open house, not that i'm considered a noc student anymore, but anihow, at least there was something for me to do and contribute back to noc, so it kinda felt good

Team Sheares went into tonight’s male Badminton Semi-final as the underdog in so many ways. We were playing taking on the defending champions, in their front yard, at a sport that has been their forte for years, sending in a motley crew, most of who had never played with each other before this year. After a disappointing loss in the semis last year, following a rescheduling event that crippled our formidable lineup, this year’s last minute change of date brought an air of déjà vu along with it. Knowing that we were up against the odds, the Sea of Orange issued a call to arms, in an attempt to amass and engulf KR’s MPSH. The Warriors however, seemed more than prepared for the oncoming flood, as they were out in numbers themselves, banners and drum sets in tow, literally bringing the house down with their cheers. Tonight, the Sea of Orange would have to rely on purely their voices, hearts and spirits, to carry their team through the night, with whatever help they could get from their whistles and bottles.

The first singles saw Hao Jie once again leading from the front as he fought tooth and nail with his opponent, in what would be the first David vs. Goliath battle of the night. Though considerably outsized, Hao Jie outmaneuvered his opponent and took the first set. Rallies were long and drawn out, with both players being sent to all corners of the court, testing their skill, endurance and concentration. The KR crowd had the upper had for these early stages, as even though the Orange supporters kept trickling, attention and voices were constantly divided as the girls were simultaneously playing TH on the adjacent court. Undeterred, Hao Jie wrapped up the second set as well, clinching an extremely crucial point for Sheares.

It's 6:30am and obviously I am awake because of the jet lag (Europe is 5hrs ahead) and I saw a rat in the kitchen before I went to bed (how to sleep with a rat running around??). Europe was a ton of fun, art and a whole new experience into a different part of the world, which I hope I will remember for a long long time (given how expensive it is). On the plane back while peeing I suddenly felt quite proud of myself, no idea why :p

For me I didn't bring my camera so all the photos are with them, plus I suddenly realise I lost the motivation to have my picture taken. It's better to be behind the camera I think. And I have just found my first "must be on repeat mode" song for the new year, KT Tunstall's "Suddenly I see", which is the opening song for the movie "The Devil Wears Prada", darn nice because you can see pretty people and good fashion (fwah i sound bimbotic leh). My friend just told me she's Scottish and by default all Scottish singers are very talented, if everyone is like Tunstall then you bet your ass it's right!!

Finally I'm done with my Biol475 take home paper, not exactly my finest work, but I hope it will do to get me a passing grade. I hate take home papers, because then that requires you to do research instead of trying to bullshit your way into a higher grade than you actually deserve (a skill which I think I am quite apt at). Today I even had to drop by the office to package the 7 boxes of adenoviruses (come on, it's the end of the year, cut your research staff some slack, save your orders till next year!), so it was really kind of crazy trying to get everything together, all the while thinking that "Shit, I haven't packed my luggage yet!" Well finally (again), I'm here at home, packing up my stuff for the ultra-cool 18-Dec to 5-Jan Europe trip, probably the most expensive trip I'm ever going to go for in my life. As I am typing now, Chio, Fangxi, Summer and Caiping should be in Zurich taking in the sights, hopefully remembering that the permed one will be joining them tomorrow night at 1:08am in Interlaken. Yep I shall begin this trip by dropping in Gatwick, taking a train to Luton, rotting there for 5hrs to take the flight to Basel and finally taking a train into Interlaken, all alone! Cool!! Too bad my crappy camera isn't working, so I guess I can't share this part of the journey with you guys! (plus I'll be too lazy to type about that too)

Eh recently life has been busy, rushing projects stuff lidat..Let's see

I've been to new york to attend some overseas singaporean unit gathering, which ended up as a recruitment session for pricewaterhousecoopers. Blah, and the lady in charge also hasn't got back to me after I've emailed her (lidat how to keep in contact with Singaporeans? so laggy one). Oh yar, I went with 2 Club Sg students from Penn, turned out that one of them (Ming Jing) is a President Scholars. Power sia!! Budden no photos so too bad.

Monday we went for some mentoring marathon from Weiss Tech House, which basically is a speed dating session where you meet with a mentor for 20min and then switch to another one. Got quite a lot of feedback for LabAide/LabSense/LabMates so we are going to further refine the model and hopefully get a Wharton M.B.A candidate with a Ph.D to be our mentor. Any student researchers out there email me!! After that was the batch 7's graduation ceremony at Downtown Club, near the Independence Square, quite a classy place, but the food not very impressive. I don't bring my camera out, so we have to wait till everyone uploads their photos before I can post anything here.

Thank you very much for pitching to the Innovation Fund committee. We were impressed by your project; however, after reviewing your pitch, we have unfortunately decided that LabAide is not the right fit for the Weiss Tech House at this time. We have outlined a couple of reasons below:

* similarity of existing centralized data collection systems (in hospitals & medical offices)

* difficulty in verification / certification of data compared with trusted method of composition notebook

* impracticality of customizing software to tightly integrate with diverse laboratory equipment

* lack of advantage over existing online data collection tools (google spreadsheet etc.)

woohoo, this mutherfucker has just finished the philadelphia marathon in 3hr34min!!!

for those who dun understand why i'm so darn excited, it's because i shaved like 40min off my personal best record for a marathon (shummer, it's 26.2miles, 42km)..wahahaha shiok lah!!!! although that's still not good enough to qualify for the boston marathon (3hr10min), but still it's a hugeeeee improvement, considering i didn't run for the past 2months..wahaha the older u get, the better you are!!! oh maybe it was just the beer doing its job..guess what there is actual 1 water point where they were giving out BEER!! how cool is that???

thanks mark, danny and elvin for coming down to support me!! next time dun cheong the night before i got marathon leh..very sad i canot go one leh..

revelation: i haven run for the past 2months, because errr.. weather abit cold mahz..well anyway yesterday to compensate i ran for 2hrs, din manage to finish the whole distance because i met my room mate on the way back (heng ar)..the whole distance i was hullicinating about macdonalds, auntie anne's, skittles, chocolates..all the sweet stuff..sia lah, i'm getting weak..and to top it off after i went back i slept for 10hrs..wahahaha die liao lah

the race is in 3days, gonna start at 8am..assuming i dun freeze my ass off at the start line i need to complete it within 4hrs to have a realistic chance of trying to qualify for boston marathon..considering i din run for 2runs, i think that's impossible..wahahaha

hmm, too busy and dun have the mood to post anything for the past 10days or so..well last night my elder bro told me it was yanling's bdae, so yep HAPPIE BIRTHDAY!! woohoo!! i hope she stills remember me when I get back in 9months' time..wahahaha

so anyway i'm still recovering from my Pitch-biol475midterm-halloween hangover-biol475presentation shit, and i figured what better way to relax than to watch House MD..a really cool doctor show, with some crude surgical scenes too..and one thing is that the pretty young doctor actually likes this old smart rude arrogant crippled doctor..tv is full of wonders huh..or it only goes to show girls like to go for asses..wahahaha, so I managed to finish 1 season in a week, now starting on season 2 which has like 24 episodes of rare, near impossible to get medical conditions..cool thing is they didn't make some disease out of nowhere, these are actually documented cases..thanks to google for telling me that

so recently the entrepreneurial bug in me got awaken again, and i somehow came up with 3 ideas while discussing with mark and a few others in the NOC program..cool thing is for one of them i'm going to meet with a chiropractor in philly on friday to discuss the prospects, that was till 5min ago when i realise the idea was being used already..darn..oh well no harm talking to him i guess..and after that i went back to my recipe thing (canot say too much now) and tot of something while i was in the toilet..yep chye u're right, ideas do bloom out when u're shitting..wahaha..oh and there's this big big idea i had with mark, it could be a big one..also canot say anything yet, unless u got $10k wanna give me seed money to start it

something exciting yet not so entrepreneurial also happen this week, we (Vector BioLabs) got an email enquiry from the Genome Institute of Singapore!! cool, all the way from the other side of the world..haha which means there is potential business back home, which means i can discuss further with my boss on the possibility of having a distributor (=me) in singapore, technically i'm still working for them, but hey..it's business leh!! i hope something comes out of this

oh yar forgot to mention that one of my bosses went to china on a business trip, which means i get to do experiments from the start, so cool..until i realise i suck at the expts, cant get good DNA yields..oh well he's been gone for 1 week, i have 2 more weeks to buck up i guess..wahaha now i'm the fedex boy, lab tech (gel caster/runner, minipreper, colony picker, autoclaver)..so that's good..i guess i'm one of the few ppl to actually get to do everything..woohoo~~

as everyone can attest, i'm a huge fan of stingrays, yep the same ones that killed steve, not when they're happily swimming in the sea, but when they're happily bbq-ing in sambal chilli..sadly for americans, they have no clue of how fantastic this meal is, which was why i cant seem to find this delicacy in the supermarkets :(

so imagine my delight when my friend brought out a stingray for a bbq that we has last week, it felt like a dream come true, someone heard my screams for sambal stingrays and answered my prayers!! wahahaha..shiok shiok, so ydy i went down chinatown with mark to hunt for the stingray..den i realise i dunno what stingray is in chinese..so we ended playing charades in 4 seafood stores..which sorta goes like this

"errr, the flat flat fish, swims at the bottom of the sea one, the tail very thin and got spikes"

among the guesses that came out include "huh", "turtle"..even one ah-ma said some weird name and added in a 'woooh' as she flapped her hands..eventually some ah pek saved the day and said "mo gui yu" wahaha bingo sia..alas his shop din sell that but it made our search easier..so we trooped on to the next store and wala! among a pile of fishes, we found stingray!!! but the whole place stinks, so i left the picking of the stingray to mark..after that we bought sambal and went back to cook it

cooking involves lighting up some spark inside the oven, which seems scary actually..initially i tot the spark should light up by itself so i just turn on the gas..very apparently when we could smell gas and still there was no fire, we realise something was wrong "if there really is a fire now. would be neighbours care ar..after the last saga..wahaha" so anyway we fixed it and proceeded to cooking it..but somehow it din taste right..i tot just put sambal and wrap in aluminium foil can ler..but the taste not shiok enough leh..plus the sambal was devil-ish hot..so most of the dinner we spent trying to cool our tongues..not very successful..

[if any of u guys noe how to cook a proper bbq stingray teach me leh, there's still another pack of stingray in the fridge]

oh well, next week we should be going back there to buy crabs and eat..so if ani of u got reciepe for black papper/ chilli crab drop a note too ar..i'll give proper due credits one, before eating i'll say grace for u..wahaha

you noe every group sure got their fair share of jokers one, and these ppl very often are the ones who dun mind others making fun of them, or even doing stupid things to make ppl luff..yet everione else always seem to think that these people are immune to the sad stuff in life..depression, mood swings, disappointment, even anger..and sometimes jokers canot afford to show that side of themselves to others, because it's not their 'usual' self..i tell u ar..all jokers are the most selfless people in the world can..and it's a tough personality to upkeep when u have shit (which reminds me, some squirral/pigeon/animal on a tree shitted on me when i walked out of my classroom today, like how suay lah..tmd) to deal with..it sucks i tell you..to keep on smiling when it hurts inside...

having pretty much nuthing to do this weekend (other than my assignments, which of coz can only be done at the very last minute), i woke up like ard 2pm on saturday, freezing cold from the weather, which was like 15deg outside! fwah totally canot feel my feet, so eventually i went around the apartment trying to figure out how to turn on the heater, which i did but my apartment being on the 3rd level, takes like days for the heat to travel up with infinite pipes to my heater..so eventually decided to walk ard my apartment in jeans, 2 layers of shirts and socks..wahahaha no idea how to survive winter

well anyway after i got woken up from my nap by some songs, i found charmaine to talk to..everione else was busy mode or not online loh..den after abit of talking she managed to convince me to run..so i headed out, haven brushed my teeth, wash my face..so my hair was like pom pom when i went out..the moment i step out i started to regret ler, the cold-ness is like biting your face man..so anyway since i'm geared up and i have a full marathon coming in 4weeks i guess i better start training..eventually the run became a fight to avoid freezing my ass..so i gotta run faster and faster to generate more heat..wahaha good training, but damn shagged sia

so after i came back ah huat came and jio me to go for some maf celebration here..must pay sia..but nuthin to do so went loh..we did some despicable there that i shall not mention here (paiseh ar shamir) and the gathering was not bad..considering i managed to meet up with some of the council ppl..31st batch is here also..fwah makes me feel old, but also feels good when they mentioned, "oh u are the orange shirt people right?always see you guys one" and immediately i told them how ying1 hun2 bu2 shan4 we are..wahaha, go back must siao siao show the 32nd, 33rd batch our power again sia! den after that we left to play some board games at vincent's place, some bean-growing game i played during my mammoth caves 5-star camping trip..plus we managed to drag carmen along, another sporean that estee met during the maf function..haha barely know her for 2hrs and she's playing board games with us ler..estee quite good at networking sia..and barely 2hr of knowing ah huat, she started calling him the "dirty man", which was quite a true reflection lah..
